How has the category religion functioned in American history?

This introductory level course explores the way “religion” became such a useful category for people and groups in the United States. How did the European idea of “religion” get to the Americas? What is the relationship between religion and race, immigration, gender, and other categories? We will explore the various ways “religion” functioned as a category for sorting out “us” and “them” for social actors in American history.
